Engaged by One Digital Solutions, Yellowfields designed and developed the cartography and 3D landmark assets for use on interactive advertising totems in the town centre. The extract above is shown at about one‐third of the actual display scale, which was 1:750, to ensure legibility on a 55‐inch full HD screen.
The mapping was based upon the Ordnance Survey (OS) MasterMap, permitted under the new public sector mapping agreements (PSMA). The design concept was for heads‐up mapping, with each totem to be orientated north‐south, providing map coverage that was consistently on an east‐west axis. This reflects the physical and functional form of the town centre. This approach would also have helped build a stronger and consistent mental map of the town centre to the user whilst still benefitting from the heads‐up approach. Furthermore, the totem itself could have effectively act as a ‘north arrow’ — itself a physical navigation aid.
