Yellowfields was commissioned by international transport consultants, Steer Davies Gleave, to design and develop the cartography and pictograms for a new wayfinding system for the historic Italian city of Bologna.
The wayfinding project is the first expression of the new city brand. It is intended to help tourists and visitors understand the city and promote exploration and discovery of the many attractions that Bologna offers. It will also benefit residents as it is part of a wider push to promote sustainable travel in Bologna, such as walking and cycling.
The mapping was based upon Open Source Mapping (OSM), as held by the Comune di Bologna, and the associated data it distributes via it’s own open map (data) system, based upon OpenStreetMap. Reduced scale extracts are shown here.
The mapping also required the design and development of a full set of unique pictograms that reflected the graphic language of the map and the Bologna brand.
