As a continuation of the Interconnect Birmingham project, Jason was engaged by City ID to develop the base mapping for the Edgbaston area of Birmingham. Covering an area as large as the city centre (c.10km²), this area has quite a different urban form to the city centre, with outdoor activities prevailing. The area, therefore, focuses on the canal network and outdoor activities.
As previously, to create a royalty-free base mapping for stakeholders to use for their own purposes, the topography was developed from aerial imagery. For such applications, you cannot simply create geometrically accurate mapping—you need to apply rules of generalisation and simplification to ensure certain features and themes are enhanced and more relevant to the specific application.
