A rather unusual request arrived in June from Six to Start, an independent games developer and entertainment company based in London. To support their most popular smartphone fitness game, Zombies, Run! they required the design and production of a fictional map to be developed for a board game concept—yes, a board game!
“Working with Jason on our Zombies, Run! board game was a pleasure. He brought a great deal of ideas to the table, was thoughtful and detailed in design discussions, and delivered high-quality designs that brought our fictional locations to life.”
The map took it’s visual cues from orienteering and other traditional ‘recreational’ forms of mapping to make the players feel it was a real and engaging environment.
Following on from the success of the first board game map, developed in 2016, Six to Start engaged Jason to create a map to be used on a second board game. This time, the game takes place on an island and in a more testing physical environment where the relief and geography provide more challenges for the gamers. The extracts here are not to scale but show the continued development of the graphic style, which deliberately echoes the OS leisure map series (Landranger and Explorer) so that gamers could bring existing knowledge to the ‘table’ to interpret and read the map.
