Bay Area Bike Share Maps

First concept extract of on-street mapping created for the Bay Area Bike Share Scheme, San Francisco, directed by City ID

Leading wayfinding practitioners, City ID, asked Jason to help create the base cartography for the Bay Area Bike Share project in San Francisco, USA. This is the region’s bike sharing system with 700 bikes and 70 stations providing Bay Area residents and visitors with an additional transportation option for getting around the region. The areas mapped covered the city of San Francisco itself, East Bay and San José, that are to be found across the Bay to the east and south-east.

Working to City ID’s design specification, the maps were created at a scale of 1:6,000 with a deliberately simplified graphic style to present an appropriate background for the many layers of information and to present a geographic coverage appropriate to cyclists.

Below is a reduced scale extract of the topographic development of part of the East Bay area—simplifying and generalising forms and road patterns. Other extracts show much reduced-scale extracts of final development by City ID, pulling through more geography, including elevation (contours), POIs and other information relevant to cyclists layered over the original topography.

Under City ID’s direction, Jason also assisted with the final artworking for individual wayfinding map panels covering over 300 locations, with more to follow at a later date.
