Campus Plan

Example ‘heads-up’ map panel used on one of the wayfinding totems on the Goldsmiths University campus

Goldsmiths, University of London, commissioned Yellowfields to create a new campus map and sign artwork (much reduced example above) to update their existing on-site wayfinding totems. The existing modular-based totems were to be re-used but vinyl-wrapped with new artwork.

The campus map was designed with a more evident visual hierarchy, clearer presentation of campus buildings and more closely aligned with the brand and associated colour palette. The maps were now also heads-up to align themseleves with the user’s point of view (heads-up), with what is now regarded as best practice in static on-street wayfinding maps. The map is supported by a look-up index located below the map. The design was also informed by accessibility and legibility requirements. As such it was tested for set-out, colour contrast, colour-blindness, font size and typeface choice relative to best practice and available guidance. The map was also structured to lend itself to other applications in print and electronic dissemination.

A new set-out concept was also created as the existing signs are not as accessible to all users as they could be. This new approach (set out below), which re-aligns and re-focuses information, is being tested on one of the existing totems, and if successful, will be rolled out at a later date.
