An Independent Practitioner
Jason Clark MA MSIAD, cartographer and graphic designer, started trading under the banner of Yellowfields* more than 20 years ago. The aim was to provide independent and expert cartographic and graphic direction as a B2B service. Jason has gained extensive experience across many fields, but particularly in town planning and transport planning.
Jason’s managed and delivered visual communications projects of all sizes for a wide-range of clients; from private individuals to global corporations, and not-for-profits’ through to Government departments, both as an independent practitioner and as part of large multidisciplinary teams. Jason continues to assist a wide range of clients working across numerous fields and sectors, producing a variety of maps and visual communication material.
As a sole-trader, Jason works both as an independent consultant and as a sub-consultant to organisations wishing to add to their existing skill set and experience for specific, ad-hoc or ongoing projects.
Jason enjoys collaborating with professionals and creatives from all fields, employing craft, design and technology to create successful outcomes for clients. He has worked alongside a wide range of public and private organisations, and private individuals, on projects based in Ireland, Italy, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, UAE, Vietnam, the UK and the USA.
Approach to Commissions
with over 35 years of experience in cartography and visual communication, across both the public and private sectors, Jason still sees himself very much as a ‘journeyman’ in the professional and historical sense, taking every opportunity to learn on all projects and deliver mapping solutions that achieve client needs.
“When the outcome drives the process we will only ever go where we’ve already been. If process drives the outcome we may not know where we’re going, but we will know we want to be there.”
Jason is fundamentally research- and process-focused, preferring to steer clear of the default and popular ‘potato-stamping’ approaches that come from template and menu-driven solutions. He specialises in creating bespoke and custom maps serving the needs of a diverse clientele.
In respect to design, Jason’s guiding approach is to reduce complexity; focusing on the essential and necessary to create solutions of clarity, simplicity and function. In essence, a somewhat ‘minimalist’ ideological approach to counter the ever-increasing information overload and excessive richness of modern life.
A Multidisciplinary Offer
Being educated and experienced within the complementary disciplines of cartography, graphic design and wayfinding, enables Jason to provide an holistic level of service, with strong design and production values.
Jason’s core discipline is cartography, but he is also very experienced in graphic design, information design, spatial analysis (GIS) and wayfinding. The synergy between these disciplines informs his approach and process, enabling Jason to offer balanced and pragmatic advice and solutions that exceed expectations.
