The current site plan

Initially commissioned by Ironside Farrar in 2018, Jason was tasked with designing and producing a wayfinding map for Edinburgh BioQuarter (EBQ), a novel mixed-use urban neighbourhood situated at the heart of Edinburgh. EBQ is a hub for health innovation, housing a world-renowned community of health-related innovators and companies. In addition to the map, Jason provided comprehensive signage design for the site. To enhance the visitor’s understanding of the site, a 3D model of EBQ was created. This model was integrated into the orientation boards, providing a broader site context and additional wayfinding cues. These cues were implemented in a heads-up format to ensure optimal visibility.¹ Given the involvement of multiple stakeholders, the design needed to accommodate a diverse range of brands. Jason continues to provide updates and enhancements to this ongoing project. The scheme underwent further updates both to the map and signage in 2025.

¹ As of 2025, the client decided to abandon the heads-up (best practice) approach and to show the entire site plan in full in the conventional north-up approach. The site plan and 3D model now have somewhat overlapping roles and functions, which was previously better defined. This has reduced the effectiveness and purpose of the signs.
